How to size and build Minecraft arches and block curves
An arch becomes predictable when you choose two dimensions first: the horizontal span and the vertical rise.
Span and rise define the character of the arch
Span is the distance between the two curve endpoints. Rise is the height from that endpoint line to the top. A large rise makes the arch tall; a small rise makes it flatter. This is more useful than choosing a vague style name because you can match the exact opening available in the build.

The generator creates the curved top, not the legs
The arch generator draws the upper elliptical curve from one endpoint to the other. If the final structure needs vertical sides, extend those two endpoints straight downward. Separating the curved section from the legs makes the dimensions clearer: the rise only describes the curve.
Why row coordinates help
A screenshot is useful, but row coordinates are easier to verify during construction. Each generated row lists the occupied column ranges. That makes it possible to count inward from a known edge, mirror the opposite side and mark the row complete without constantly zooming the picture.
Build workflow
- Measure the opening and choose the exact span.
- Choose how much vertical rise is available above the endpoint line.
- Set curve thickness. Start with one block for a light outline and increase it for heavy stone ribs or framing.
- Mark the horizontal midpoint in-game.
- Follow the rows from top to bottom or from both endpoints toward the top, keeping the two halves mirrored.
- Use progress checkboxes to mark completed rows and bookmark the URL if you will continue later.
Choosing thickness
A one-block curve is efficient for trim and outlines. Thicker curves look more structural and can give room for a second material, lighting or carved detail. Because the inside and outside ellipses are discretized independently, very small arches can change shape noticeably when thickness increases. Inspect the blueprint rather than assuming every thicker outline is just a perfect one-block offset.
From one arch to a tunnel or bridge
Once one arch rib is correct, repeat the same blueprint at the other end of the tunnel and connect matching blocks between them. For a bridge, the generated curve can define the underside opening while the deck and parapet remain independent. This approach makes the difficult curved part deterministic before you add style.
When to use another shape tool
If the curve must close into a complete ring, use the circle generator. If horizontal and vertical diameters both matter in a closed shape, use the oval generator. For a round roof rather than an opening, use the dome generator.
Common mistakes
Changing the midpoint halfway up
Every row must reference the same horizontal center. A one-block center drift makes one shoulder steeper than the other.
Using total height when you mean rise
If straight legs are part of the design, do not include them in the rise input. Generate only the curved part, then add equal vertical columns below both endpoints.
Eyeballing the second half
Block curves are sensitive to step placement. Mirror the generated row positions instead of trying to make the far side look similar by eye.
