Minecraft Nether Portal Coordinates and Linking

The 8:1 coordinate rule is simple; reliable portal linking is slightly more complicated because existing portals and exact placement can affect the result.

The basic 8:1 rule

For Overworld → Nether travel, divide X and Z by 8. For Nether → Overworld travel, multiply X and Z by 8. The calculator leaves Y out of this scaling because the common 8:1 conversion applies horizontally.

Example conversion

An Overworld target at X 800, Z −400 converts to approximately X 100, Z −50 in the Nether. A Nether target at X 125, Z 40 converts to approximately X 1000, Z 320 in the Overworld.

Decimals are target areas

Division can produce decimals. Treat the converted value as the ideal horizontal target area, then choose a safe practical block nearby. A portal frame spans several blocks, so the exact frame position matters more than forcing every decimal to one rounding rule.

Why portals may link differently than expected

Creating a portal can interact with existing portals and the game's portal search behavior. A mathematically converted coordinate is therefore a strong planning reference, not a guarantee that a particular pair will link exactly as intended.

A safer setup workflow

  1. Calculate the target X/Z.
  2. Travel near that location in the destination dimension.
  3. Check for existing portals nearby.
  4. Place and activate the new portal.
  5. Test both travel directions before building permanent infrastructure around it.
